559-Schwalbe Marathon 26 x 1.75 (47-559)
My first love of cycling came from touring around my home province on my 1980’s Norco Bigfoot. This was when Mountain Bikes were taking the bike scene by storm. Although I pined for a true touring bike, like a Nishiki or Cannondale, I could only afford one bike and the Norco was it.
I grew to love it and still have it. We travelled all four Atlantic Provinces together and it was more than up to the task.
That is the long way of saying that rigid frames mountain bikes make excellent touring bikes, especially if you aren’t travelling exclusively on paved roads and need/want lower gearing.
I want to cater more to touring cyclists and for those that are just starting out a mountain bike is a great bike to start with. And mountain bikes have 26” (559) wheels. And touring demands a reliable tire.
The Schwalbe Marathon may be the best value for money touring tire out there. There are lots of great touring tires out there, every major tire manufacturer has one or more, but for $70 (which isn’t cheap) I don’t think you can do better. These are the tires I ride on my Surly LHT.
Schwalbe is recognized as a leader in the bicycle tire industry.
