I have fallen in love with vintage 3-speeds.  You really don't need more than that. I am especially fond of Raleigh's with a Sturmey-Archer AW hub. These work horses are nearly indestructible, easy to maintain and operate flawlessly. This is a genuine Sturmey Archer indicator chain. Vive les trois vitesses!

We also have some slightly longer indicator chains Made in Japan. They are not original SA and the craftsmanship is not quite as good. The spindle length is the same but the distance from the spindle shoulder (where the chain attaches) to the end of the threads that screw in to the cable anchor is 89mm (compared to 72mm for the SA).
